Commission Form

Commission prices are significantly higher than my adoption prices, as those are done for fun and at my muse's discretion; if you're looking for a deal on a pre-finished character portrait, Portrait Adoption is the place to go!

Commission estimates are given based on the time I think it will take to complete your request, paying myself a decent hourly wage. I will do very simple, small pencil pieces starting at $20 for a single face only. For larger, more detailed pieces, I charge according to complexity, and my personal interest level. A pencil piece with a full figure starts at $75 and goes up, depending on size, complexity of backgroung, number of characters and level of detail. I work in pencil, ink, watercolors, colored pencil, oils and digital media. Printing and other rights are available, but not standard. Once you have submitted a request, I will contact you with any questions I might have, some choices of medium and size, rough composition sketches, estimated completion date and payment information. Estimates are good for 3 months.

My process: I do very rough, scribbly sketches to talk about composition ideas at no charge, then require half payment before going on to the final drawing. When the final drawing is ready for ink, color, or final shading, I require the remainder of the payment. If you are not happy at any stage previous to the request for final payment, and I cannot tweak to suit you, all of your deposit will be refunded. I keep all sketches in this case, and may finish and resell them to another client. If you fail to respond to emails, I reserve the right to resell any abandoned work after 6 months with NO refund of your deposit. Keep your contact information current with me. I am relatively good about keeping in touch, and if you haven't heard from me in a few weeks, please contact me. You may want to whitelist my email address!

I enjoy interactive commissions - I want your piece to look like your character, and you to be happy. I plan for several revisions and adjustments when I quote a piece, but because of the mediums I work in, you must request all changes at the sketching stage - once we are past that stage, there are few changes I can make without starting over.

I do work other than potraits, including technical illustration, landscapes, abstracts, children's book illustration, costume design and graphic design.

Please use correct spelling and grammar and proofread your description. Fields marked with a * are required.

I would like a direct likeness of the provided material. I verify that I am the holder of the copyright of the provided material and I authorize use of it.

Clothing for the character(s):
What does your character wear? Please include jewelry, weapons, or anything out of the ordinary. If you don't have a specific costume in mind, it is helpful to say 'space pilot clothing,' 'standard ranger clothing' or 'upper class medieval garb.'

Personality and background of the character(s):
What is this character like as a person? What does this character do? What is he/she good at? What is his/her history? What sort of mood is he/she in normally? What makes this character angry or sad? Please check all that apply:
I wish to commission an exclusive piece, for my use only.
I wish to commission an piece, but don't mind if prints and products are made later, to be sold only by Ellen.
Ellen selling products would be okay, but I want the only print or to own the original and know that no prints will be made.
I am only interested in owning the original.
I am looking for illustrations that would be published.
I wish to discuss getting product reprint rights as well.
I wish to commission a logo or company design.
I am willing to pay up to a maximum of $ for a portrait.
Minimum amount is $20.00. For group portraits, add a minimum of $20.00 for each additional character (face only). Prices in US dollars, please. I will contact you with a size and medium I will work in for this fee. Expect color to be about twice as much as black and white, and of course, smaller work is cheaper than larger!
Is this a rush job?
No rush. Yes, I have a deadline.
Minimum amount for a rush job is $75.00, a rush job is anything with a deadline 4 weeks or less in the future. A rush job will be quoted at a higher rate.
Your deadline date and any other pertaining information:
A deadline is considered the date the portrait is complete, not the date the portrait arrives in the mail. Packaging and mailing will also take time, if you are receiving an original or a print. I suggest adding a minimum of 10 days from your given deadline date to figure out the soonest possible day you might physically receive the portrait in the mail, though you may also choose to pay for express mail. If you are not in the US, you will need to factor in more time for shipping. I will ship anywhere in the world. You will also receive a digital copy of the piece to place on your webpage and/or use as an avatar. Avatars, banners and website elements may be designed for you at minimal extra cost. You may purchase any of the products I carry with your commissioned design on them, including keychains, mousepads, t-shirts and more.
